Michel Laplace descubrió el jazz a los trece años y estudió trompeta. Fue corresponsal del International Trumpet Guild (1977-83) y secretario de su rama francesa (1977-80), cofundador y secretario general (1978-80) del Guild Française des Trompettistes (GFT) (1978), y miembro fundador de la asociación Cuivres en France (1988). Conferenciante y ensayista, es responsable de la introducción de una sección de jazz en los congresos internacionales de músicos de viento-metal.
